Selecting your wedding venue is a big step in the planning process. In fact, it’s one of the first plans you’ll need to make, as it can dictate all the other aspects of your wedding—budget, guest list, catering options, theme, and more.
It’s not a decision to make lightly, then! Due diligence is critical. As you tour different venue possibilities, here are five questions to ask, all of which can help you pick the right place.
How many people will it hold?
Maybe you’ve always dreamed of a big wedding, with 250 people in attendance. That’s perfectly well and good—unless your dream venue only seats 100. And the inverse can also be true: A huge, cavernous room might feel empty if you only plan to invite 30 guests. Get a feel for the venue size, and think about how that impacts your guest list.
How will it look on my wedding day?
When you tour a venue in spring but plan to get married in the winter, you’re not really getting the full picture of what your big day will look like. Ask to see some photos of the venue in the appropriate season, and consider things like the plant life and general lighting around the venue; will you be disappointed if seasonal changes throw these things off?
What about catering options?
Will you be allowed to pick your own on-site caterer—or are you required to use the venue’s house kitchen crew? That’s something you’ll definitely want to know before settling on a venue!
What’s included in the rental fee?
When you pay for the space, what’s included? Are chairs part of the deal—or will you need to pay extra for those? Is silverware included, for the reception—or will you need a caterer to bring those? Think about any little “extras” and ask if they’re included in the price.
What’s the weather contingency plan?
Planning an outdoor wedding? Hopefully, you won’t get rained out—but of course, you never know. Make sure you know about the venue’s backup plan—and that you’re okay with it.
