Picking Your Wedding Caterer: 5 Mistakes to AVOID

stk310187rknThe selection of a good caterer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make regarding your wedding—because frankly, the food is what a lot of your guests are going to remember the most!

Therefore, it is important to exercise discernment, interview multiple caterers, and pick someone who really instills confidence.

It is also important to avoid common mistakes that can sometimes lead to the selection of a subpar caterer—mistakes like the ones we have listed below.

Mistake #1: Ignoring your first impressions.

A lot of catering companies will try to seduce you with lavish brochures and fancy marketing speak—but what really matters is your level of comfort and confidence in that caterer.

Always insist on a meeting with the caterer before you make any final decisions, and listen to what your gut’s telling you: Do you feel good about this caterer, or does something just not seem right?

Also: Bonus points for caterers who offer a little sample, or something to nibble on, during that first meeting!

Mistake #2: Picking a caterer who doesn’t respect your budget.

It’s important to give your caterer a budget up front, and then to get feedback on what is and isn’t possible on that budget.

A caterer who promises amazing things with a miniscule budget may not be trustworthy. Remember: You tend to get what you pay for.

A caterer who is willing to say, “No, I don’t think that will be possible on this budget”… now that’s someone you can feel comfortable with.

Mistake #3: Forgetting to specify your dietary restrictions.

Do you want something that’s gluten-free? Paleo? Kosher? Vegan?

Then say so, as early into the process as possible.

Most caterers will be more than happy to accommodate—but you’ve got to let them know what you want!

Mistake #4: Making your selections too exotic.

By the same token: You want your food to accommodate all your guests, which means respecting dietary restrictions and food allergies but also ensuring that you have dishes people will actually recognize. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask your caterer for some creative selections, but remember that not everyone is a foodie. Having a few easily recognizable dishes can be important.

Mistake #5: Settling.

Again: Catering is one of the most important dimensions of your big day. You deserve someone who will make you—and your guests—happy. So don’t settle. Keep searching until you find the caterer of your dreams.
